Technology Centre

The Digital Cinema Exchange (DCX) combines media and communications technologies to take Hong Kong cinema to new heights. Not only does the DCX support the Hong Kong film industry in transitioning from film to digital technology, but it also transforms cinema services through the screening of live alternative content, such as music concerts. This innovation provides a new “Music in Cinema” model for audiences. Since 2010, the DCX platform has brought live sports events to cinemas, creating new business opportunities for the Digital Entertainment industry.

Following a pilot scheme funded by the Film Development Council in 2011, the Technology Centre has enhanced the DCX platform through the expansion of network coverage to additional local and overseas performing venues and enabling value-added services, such as real-time advertising and live subtitling and other interactive technology. The Centre continuously extends its DCX capabilities both in scope and depth based on its digital transmission expertise to offer innovative services to the local theatre industry.

The Technology Centre streamlines production workflow with comprehensive services including 2D-to-3D conversion, 2K and 4K editing, and digital cinema output. It is also equipped with 4K digital cinema projection and professional cinema surround sound systems to facilitate production screening for content creators.

The Centre is the hub of all incoming and outgoing signal sources for live digital content in Hong Kong. It is equipped with a full range of automated satellite systems ready for 4K satellite downlink. From 3GHD to 4K, the Centre allows content creators and distributors to enhance their digital output and live broadcasting services to reach a wider geographical range of audiences with world-class picture and sound quality.

These capabilities empower Hong Kong’s Digital Entertainment industry.

The Technology Centre continues to enhance its role by adopting state-of-the-art technology to keep the industry abreast of the latest news and advances. The Centre has implemented the following initiatives to facilitate development of the local ICT and digital entertainment industry:

• Building a high-speed transmission platform in Cyberport, including the Digital Cinema Exchange and 2K/4K live streaming.
• Offering visualisation enhancement to ICT and digital media SMEs through 3D internet, stereoscopic 3D technology, augmented reality, and body-controlled technology.

A high-speed network platform such as the Digital Cinema Exchange enables users to transmit high-quality digital content within a secure network, including live streaming of 2K and 4K digital content.

Visualisation enhancement, ranging from images and animations to generated simulations, is increasingly important in advanced devices and popular applications. Recent advancements embraced by the ICT industry include 3D internet, stereoscopic 3D, motion-sensing technology, and game-based learning.

The Technology Centre is committed to fostering local talent and innovation to help the ICT and Digital Entertainment ecosystem thrive. The Centre offers state-of-the-art multimedia production facilities for rental to industry, SMEs, and academic institutions, enabling digital creators to realise their full potential.
